  • Rutger Hauer?

Fun fact: Rutger's allergic to Guinness.

I think he's Dutch. He once said he only did the Guinness ads because the amount of money he was paid allowed him to pick and choose the films he wanted to do, not what the film makers wanted him to do.

Another fact: he co-wrote the verse for the iconic The C-Beams Speech in Blade Runner:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in...rain. Time to die."
“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”
    ― Groucho Marx

    Oh, thanks, that's him.

He must have made a few quid out of the stuff, though. :)

I like the 1987 Volkswagen Golf ad, featuring Princess Di lookalike, Paula Hamilton.

The music is fantastic, but look at the car! They don't build 'em like that anymore :D

You're right. They don't. Since those days, and entirely unknown to everyone in the management of Volkswagen Audi Group, a single rogue engineer has gone around all the different production lines, secretly installing defeat software in 1000s of VAG vehicles so as to produce fraudulent emission read-outs. Amazing. But true.

Where ads are concerned, it's also true that at VAG's headquarters they've taken down from the walls of every corridor any and every print of the ad / frame of the TV commercials featuring the immortal phrase:

If only everything in life was as unreliable as a Volkswagen.

Ooops. Meant to say, 'reliable'. Of course. :)

My favourite is still Gibbs SR's 'cool as a mountain stream' toothpaste ad. I first saw it on a small black and white screen set in a disproportionately large TV cabinet. It made me realise, at an early age, never to believe anything an advertiser says, because the mountain stream that ran not far from where I was brought up was always flippin' freezing, never mind 'cool': clean your teeth in it once and you'd likely not survive to ever do so again.

It made it all the funnier to see the newspaper ads of that era which used to be emblazoned with "As seen on TV!!" As if, somehow, that was confirmation of a truth. . .

@ libra: LOL.:) 'Twas only yesterday though, surely? When 'shows' were in theatres, 'programmes' were on TV, and members of a band were brass players rehearsing down the Miners Welfare.

Mine has to be the Germolene advert. I can't remember what the advert looked like, but it had a catchy jingle that still goes round my head:

"For cuts or small burns, a scrape or a bruise, Germolene is the ointment to use. It stops infection and keeps wounds clean. You know you're safe with Germolene."

It still influences me today, and I find myself automatically choosing Germolene over other ointments.
