Loft Insulation Grant

I live in a 3 bed semi in herts. I had a guy come round last night who offers grants from the utility companies towards loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

I cannot have the walls done as its 1930's thus no cavity walls, however he quoted me £270 to insulate my loft to HPI requirement levels.

Now i know nothing about these sort of prices, does anyone know if this is a good price or not?

  • Contact your own utility company to see what they offer. Also contact your council as they often give grants for this as well. Have a look at this page http://www.kentenergycentre.org.uk/Grants/Grants_intro.asp

I'm surprised you say you can't have your 30's house cavity wall insulated as I have a 30's house & had my home cavity wall insulated about 2 years ago.

Perhaps it depends on which builder builds the houses, maybe they use different methods during the same period.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

My house is built in 30's and also doesnt have cavity walls I dont think cavity walls were that widespread back then
  • Last week i had my loft insulated for £199 fixed price through my local energy supplier(i think this is a standard price in all areas) I am in merseyside.

Pre 1930s houses are nearly always solid walls.

I wonder whether the other poster has got it right (no offence).

It is very easy to check if you have a cavity or not.

Every few courses of brick will be layed end on.
  • I would contact the local council as that's where we got our cavity wall insulation through. They had a special grant with British Gas so it cost me £250 for cavity wall insulation. Our house was built in 1935 and has cavities.
