    Thank you for the recommendation. I will certainly not attempt it after this.

    Does that apply to substituting the starter, as mentioned above (<http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p89674>)? Is that something I can do myself, or would I need an electrician for that as well?

    The ballast could have failed which may have been causing the regular bulb failures.

    Apologies for the dumb question, but googling it didn't help: which one is the "ballast" in any of the media files here <https://goo.gl/26vokx>?

    E.g. With <https://goo.gl/Q7YFqn&gt; for instance?

    Your sixth picture in the top row (19-22-06-Pro.jpg) shows the ballast as Mastec 800 690, its a rectangular shape and the starter is the smaller cylindrical unit.
