painting over a bright wall

A wall in my new house is bright blue and I'm planning on painting over it a medium-dark purple. Should I use an undercoat or will it cover ok without it?
I'm trying to be as thrifty as possible so I can buy everything I want but don't want to end up with a mess!

If its only one wall I'm thinking an extra coat of colour would still come out of the same tin?0

You should be fine with 2 coats of quality paint in your chosen colour you might decide to give it a third. It's not a radical colour change. It took 5 of white for me to believe I couldn't see any bright red hint to feature wall.0

We had a crimson 'murder hall' when we moved into our last place! We opted to use a primer before returning it to a gentler sky blue. Lord knows how many coats it would have taken without it!0 -
It took 2 coats of dulux paint to go from deep red to white so I wouldn't bother with an undercoat, just buy a quality paint.0
