Feed in Tariff Clarification

Hi there,

I've recently started renting a new build house with solar panels fitted. I've been trying to work out how I can take advantage of the Feed in Tariff scheme, but despite various searches I'm still struggling to find the answers I need.

Mechanics of solar meter
I have a solar meter under my staircase - the display seemingly alternates between the kWh that have been imported and that which has been exported.
My first question is, does my "normal" electricity meter on the outside of my house include ALL energy I've consumed, including that which I have generated from the solar panels, or does it include only the amount of electricity I have imported from the grid?

Feed in Tariff
I'm already on an electricity and gas tariff with Scottish Power that I switched to recently from the default tariff that was in place when I moved in.
Is it simply a case of applying to Scottish Power and then they will pay me for the electricity I generate at the appropriate rate, or are there specific tariffs that I would have to switch onto - i.e. would it affect the basic costs per kWh I'm being charged on the electricity I import from the grid under my existing tariff?

I would really appreciate any guidance you could provide!

Many thanks

David

Hi. I would be very surprised if you are entitled to the FiT payments for the property. What does your letting agreement say?

PV solar arrays have to be registered before payments are made. To do, this installer supplies what is known as a MCS certificate which is then sent our to a FiT payer with an application form. FIT contracts are NOT the same as energy supply contracts.

My guess is that you are entitled to use the energy that the array generates but the FiTs will be claimed by property owner.

Sorry - I should have added that your supply meter records the energy supplied from the Grid. The readings will be lower per day when the sun shines. By the sound of it, your landlord has installed an export meter which provides additional payments above the basic FIT payments.

Agree with the above about the FIT and export payments going to the owner.

Some councils and community housing associations fit solar so it is of mutual benefit i.e. the occupant gets the 'free' electricity they can use in the property, whist the council/CHA get the subsidy. If the house is privately owned, I expect it will be the same.
