Thanks to all of you for taking the time and trouble to respond. However, as I'm pretty clueless, most of these answers are way beyond my comprehension. I do run cc cleaner and I do have free AVG antivirus. My operating system is Windows 7 - I did try to do the free upgrade to Windows 10 but it wouldn't do it. As a rule I use Chrome but sometimes Mozilla. I do have plenty of space left (my daughter says so). Think it might just be nearing the end of its days. It's 5 o'clock somewhere!0

I doubt it's nearing the end of it's life. My laptop is 7 years old and I recently did a factory reset and it feels brand new again. As long as there's no nasties slowing it down, it should carry on working reasonably well.
You haven't mentioned the specs? Do you know the hard drive capacity, processor and memory values?
What happened when you tried resetting the router?
Did CCleaner or AVG find anything? Did you manage to download Malwarebytes and run that and see if it found anything?
Is it just your device having problems, or are other devices in the house (phones, tablets, smart TVs etc) having similar problems connecting to the internet?0
