Economy 10 or Economy 7 Switching Question
Options
We currently receive Electricity from British Gas on their Standard Economy 7 tariff.
When I tried to switch suppliers (from both Gas [npower] and Electricity), I was informed that our property is registered as having an Economy 10 meter.
I have looked at the meter and can't tell whether it is 10 or 7 although for info it has East Midlands Electricity markings on it.
A few questions
1. How can I tell whether I have an Economy 10 meter or an Economy 7 one ?
2. Why do British Gas charge me on an Economy 7 tariff rather than an Economy 10 one, if it is Economy 10 ?
3. Given that my heating and water heating is gas based, and therefore my electricity consumption on the Economy 7 tariff only accounts for just over 1/4 of my electricity consumption, does the Economy 7 (or 10) tariff give me that much of a benefit anyway ?
4. If I do have an Economy 10 meter, what is the best way to get a deal for both my Electricity and Gas supply given that I can't use the comparison sites ?
Thanks

A few answers
1. Any supplier should be able to tell by your MPAN whether or not you have a compatable meter.
E10 is an old legacy tariff, and E10 meters are not compatble with most other suppliers. An E7 meter is compatable with almost all suppliers.
As you are now supplied by British Gas, a supplier that traditionally did not supply electricity, then you probably have an E7 meter compatible with almost every other supplier
2. You presumably asked for E7, hence that is why British Gas supply you on that tariff
3. Use a comparison site to find out if E7 benefits you based on your current consumption. If not, are you prepared to change your habits to make E7 beneficial to you?
4. If you actually have an E10 meter, and are currently supplied by Britiah Gas (not on an E10 tariff), then I feel sorry for you.
As I post frequently, do not attempt to switch supplier if you currently are supplied on a legacy tariff (such as E10) as attempting to do so (with that metering) will invariably end in tears.0 -
British Gas confirmed that we have an Economy 7 meter, so we just need to make sure that any replacement supplier has the correct MPAN number!0
