Oh dear........

Had a bath this evening and later on went into the kitchen and noticed in the corner where the bath is there was dripping water and a crack in the corner where the wall joins the ceiling iyswim.

In addition when you stand back it looks like there is a sag on the ceiling and when I got on a chair to feel it it's got a spongy feel and is wet.

I deduce a leak from the bath area.

My question is this, who do I call first? Insurance or plumber?

I want to move quite quickly as have two young children who will need a bath at some point soon and I don't want to risk their safety if the floor is unstable or more damage being done.

Thanks in advance

Plumber. Unless you've obviously sloshed the water over the sides of the bath.

Thanks, no water sloshing taking place. What about repairs to the ceiling?

  • My daughter caused this problem to our lounge ceiling (the family bathroom is directly above)She was filling the bath too full and the bath overflow was being breached.
If this could be your problem carefully puncture the ceiling.Let it drain, dry out and make good. Good luck.

Drain ceiling carefully into a bucket, as above.

You need to get the side panel off the bath, which should enable you to see where the leak has come from. Then you will have a better idea whether a plumber is needed.

The ceiling isn't holding the bath up. The bath would still be perfectly safe if there was no ceiling. The floor joists are holding up the bathroom floor.

Whether you call insurance is up to you. Sometimes it's cheaper not to claim, as if you claim for every small household incident, you will soon see higher premiums.

At present you, need to stop the leak. When that's done and it's dried-out, you can assess what else to do.

Where is the leak from-waste or supply? Obviously if the latter you need to isolate that to prevent further leakage.
I doubt that it's worth involving your home insurance, assuming you have an excess of a couple of hundred

Thanks for the replies, there is a small gap where the ceiling has split and the water is dripping slowly from there, when I push on the area no extra water flows out but the ceiling looks slightly bowed. However this morning the ceiling has almost returned to normal and the bowing seems significantly less; quite why I don't know.

It appears to be when we have a bath as it doesn't happen when the shower is run.

Going to have to chip off all of the panelling as the previous owners thought it would be a good idea to totally box in the bath area with white wood panelling which is going to be fun; not!

Lol yes very brave indeed! So I just felt it and it feels dry to the touch, I've given it a good old poke and it doesn't appear to contain any water??? Just feels pliable but not wet iyswim.

In addition I ran the shower this morning for around 10 minutes and no water appeared at all and no wetness on the ceiling very odd indeed.

Run the bath with the side off and see whats what under the bath

Thanks, I'm going to start chipping off the wood panelling and will report back when I've seen the damage.
