Oh no...Paypal payment refused!

I joined e-bay about 7 days ago. Since then, I have bid on 5 items and won 4. All of the items are books bar one which is a CD-ROM. All of them are non-fiction and directly relate to my line of work. Of the first three items I won, I paid immediately because I was on the computer whilst the bidding was ending (also wanted to begin receiving good feedback). I sent a cheque to the first person which he has cashed, and has since given me positive feedback.

I paid the second person through Paypal a sum of £16 (£12 for the book, £4 for p&p). The book is old and was the item I was looking forward to receiving the most. After I made my payment, I received an e-mail thanking me for my prompt payment and was asked if I minded the item being sent out on Monday (tomorrow). I replied that this would be fine.

Tonight I received a notification from paypal advising me that the seller has now refused my payment??? (Note, the third and fourth seller have so far accepted my paypal payment)

Could it be that the seller doubts my integrity?

When I signed up for e-bay, I used my real surname but gave my nickname (the one I've been called since I was a child) instead of my proper forename. My nickname is almost like an abbreviation anyway.

Due to the nature of my work and the fact I am one of three people (apparently) in the country with my name, I did not want my proper name going onto my account and being linked to my home address. I also left my phone number out. I'm very security conscious.

However, my Paypal account (not verified) has my full name and my address. The seller received this information.

Now, the e-mail account that I use for e-bay is web based and when I set it up (some time ago), I used a nick-name and this is used when e-mails are sent out. However, this nickname (along the lines of "Purple Girl") is linked with my e-mail address and so isn't completely random.

On top of this, my ebay profile name is unrelated to any of the above names!!

I have e-mailed the seller and have queried the refusal and offered to send a cheque. Perhaps she thinks I might claim that the item hasn't arrived and ask for my money back?

From a seller's point of view, would I come across as dodgy?

yeah, if you've low feedback and unverified, the seller isnt covered by paypal's "protection" policy

offer to do a direct bank transfer instead, not as quick as paypal tho

if youreally want it quick, just wing him cash in the post WELL CONCEALLED, then he can post immediatley!

I really would NOT recommend you do this. It could get "lost" in the post or the seller could claim they never received it( not saying they would, but hey you never know). Not even sure that Special Delivery (which at minimum would cost you £3.85) covers cash. I would send the safer alternative which is postal orders if you don't want to wait for your cheque to clear.

You don't sound dodgy at all, only your seller who refunded your payment can answer your question.

Did you receive notification from ebay that the seller had requested your contact details. He may have done this just to gather as much information about you as possible. If they have seen that you do not have a contact phone number they may have become suspicious since having an invlaid conact number is against ebay policy and, if reported, can lead to your account being suspended.

it is possible the seller has boo boo'd.... and refused your payment rather than accepting......

did you send the right amount?
has the seller responded to your email?

I would just wait for their reply as there could be loads of reasons. If you have sent an email sasking why and saying you are willing to pay, then they should contact you. I would really have thought they could have sent you an email in the first place when they refused your payment- I do to my buyers. But if they dont get back to you I would send one more email and then - sorry but you cant force someone to sell to you. Their could be hundreds of reasons you dont know about for thier descion.

Dont send cash ever !!!! royal mail dont approve and their is plenty of other paymant mehods. Yeeek

I think Cat72s response is the way to go.

As lomg as you have tried to pay, and have emailed the seller to see why they haven't accepted your payment I would wait to hear from them before doing anything else.

I certainly would not suggest sending cash in the post.

as long as you send the cash recorded then things are fine,
i've NEVER had a problem with cash, simple

royal mail does not cover cash sent of course, but if you're sensible and put it well concealled in a jiffy bag for example then you will be fine

otherwise send a cheque like normal people, or even a postal order (keep the stub yourself!). they're cheaper than paypoo and instant

    of course theres always nochex

I remember when I started selling on ebay, before i could accept payments from buyers i had to upgarde to a buisness account and could not accept paypal payments until i had done this, this may be why he has rejected your payment because he does not want to upgarde and pay paypal charges.

I have also had a few problems contacting people through ebay recently so am not sure whether there have been problems with their e-mail system...if you bought the book over 8 days ago you can open an item disput although this sounds drastic all ebay does is put a message on to his "My ebay" just an alternative way to contact him
    good luck....

If the seller says he accepts paypal and doesn't give you a good enough reason for rejecting your payment then report him to ebay as a non performing seller.

If, as cookiemonster says, the seller only has a basic paypal account then that's his problem not yours. If he accepts paypal then he accepts paypal and he can't choose how you fund your payment.

I still say don't send cash, I've had too much go astray here to trust cash or uncrossed postal orders any more.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!!

Just to update, I got a swift response from my e-mail - apparently the seller was having problems with PayPoo (it is pretty c**ppy, isn't it?!) and they were more than happy to receive a cheque. :)

I'm much happier with cheques anyway and when I have to start selling my stuff to fund my new ebay addiction, I'll be stating them as my preference!
