How to clean coals

My electric fire has coals in the basket that seem to be real. I need to clean them as they've got very dirty and there's lots of dog hair mixed in from the last tenant. I've thought about washing them in a bucket, but would this make them dissolve?

    Hi
I quick look on Ebay tells me you can get replacements quite cheaply. I take the ones out my gas fire and brush them off with a dry paint brush which seems to work well.

Have done just this for a new fire, and can confirm that, indeed, water hasn't hurt them.

It's just flammable rocks, innit ;)
