Hive

Had my annual boiler service from BG a couple of weeks go. I moaned about the thermostat - it's adjacent to the front door so doesn't work well. The engineer said "you need Hive. We can fit it for you at a discount price" (£149). He made no mention of a monthly subscription, but I assume there is one? Can anyone confirm, or is there an option which just swaps out the thermostat?

Also, their T&Cs regarding data protection of appalling!

Or you could just move the existing room 'stat, a very simple job, even more so if it's wireless. You don't 'need' Hive, you just need a properly positioned 'stat, probably further down the hallway or in the main living area. Or do the same and upgrade to a modern digital programmer from about £60.
The BG engineer will be on a commission for the referral, hence his proposal.
Why would there be a monthly subscription for a CH programmer that you purchase?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Something about remote access, I think. There is some mention online about a monthly subscription for Hive. Anyway, I've decided not to take up their kind offer. I'll sort out replacing and moving the thermostat myself.
    Thanks for the replies.

    Hello.

I had Hive installed following a Boiler being newly fitted (Im into Gadgets!).

No monthly cost. The BG installer will ask you where to install the mount. Ive had no problems with it and find it great for controlling Water and Heat. I particularly like the ease of setting up Holiday Mode.

Hive are slowly but surely expanding their range (bulbs, Motion Sensor, Plugs etc...).

    Cheers,
    Gareth
