Booked hotel in Egypt independently on credit card - how do I get money back?!

Hi

Back in early November 2015 (2 weeks before the plane 'incident') I booked Easy Jet flights to Egypt for July 2016 and a hotel separately. Easy Jet cancelled my lights and refunded me. I rebooked with Monarch, they have now cancelled flights... clearly I'm not going to be able to get to Egypt now.

I bought travel insurance the same day as I booked the holiday: American Express Essential... they say that this is an act of terrorism and therefore will not refund me.. although it is just that the FCO say travel is unsafe so nut sure where I stand.

I also paid for the hotel on my MBNA credit card, so not sure if that would cover me.

It seems like the hotelier is able to provide my service, I just can't get there to utilise it as I'm not allowed to travel there from UK.

This is really confusing and I don't know what to do. My family are now looking to miss out on their summer holiday and all because I tried to save money by booking flights and hotel independently; ironically because of the Easy Jet flight sale advertised on this website :(

Please help.................

  • If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
  • The Metrojet bombing was on the 31st of October so you can't of book 2 weeks before the crash if you booked in early November.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

What does the FCO travel advice say about going to the part of Egypt where you have booked your hotel?

If they still say that it is safe to go there then you are certainly allowed to travel there, but would need to be ingenious with indirect flights in order to get there. Your travel insurance would still be valid.

If the FCO advise against travel there, then it is unlikely that your insurance policy would be valid. You could therefore contact your insurer; explain that you have a contract for insurance to travel there; if they refuse to provide cover for this then you would be in a strong position to insist that they honour a claim for cancellation. That is the kind of case that you might win at Ombudsman stage...

Did you book directly with the hotel or via a third party website?

It might be stating the obvious but have you contacted the hotel to explain that you are having difficulty securing flights and if they would consider cancelling your reservation and providing a refund - or - if they would consider holding a credit and allowing you to rebook to stay with them at a later time when the situation has calmed.

Perhaps they might even have a sister hotel down in Hurgarda which they may allow you to transfer to. Flights from the UK are still operating there.

I do hope you can get your holiday plans back on track and this sorted. I think you have found out the hard way that booking a DIY type holiday over a Package Holiday can have drawbacks.
