Good luck to them claiming that by email isn't in writing. Write to them (paper, pen and proof of posting from a Post Office) and state the facts of what happened, including who you spoke to and when and enclose a printed copy of your email. Get on the scheme protecting your deposit and raise a dispute.0

As Pixie says.25/09/15 to 25/03/16 is 6 months and 1 day.
You moved out 1st March but you didn't hand the keys back until 29th March so I think you have a Statutory Periodic Tenancy.
If you do have a SPT then your tenancy periods run from 25th to 24th and your notice should align with these dates. You can't give notice to end a tenancy which hasn't started so since your SPT started 25th March then any notice given before this date was invalid.
If you had returned the keys on/before the fixed term ended on 25th March (or 24th March if it was a 6 month tenancy) then you would not have needed to give any notice, whatever the tenancy agreement says (the contract has an end date - so it ends)
However you did not end the tenancy till yesterday when you returned the keys. So on 26th March (or 25th if a 6 month fixed term) a new, periodic, tenancy started.
Your notice in Feb could not aply to this new periodic tenancy, sice it did not exist at that time, so you need to serve a new notice or pay rent in liue of notice.
* Ending/renewing an AST: what happens when a fixed term ends? How can a LL or tenant end a tenancy? What is a periodic tenancy?0
