I can't quite believe that bit I've highlighted in bold - are you really talking about an adult?

As to the cats, I think that for a healthy male, one pouch plus nibbles seems too low.

It's also about the quality of the food being given - some will be more filling than others.

I feel sorry for the cats - they seem to be in the middle of a family social experiment... it's not just your OH that needs to show some more responsibility.

Your cats are living, breathing animals that need routine... how would you like to go hungry or have to live with the worry of whether you would be fed or not?

I do not appreciate your tone. You're being unduly rude. Everybody is irresponsible with something at some point in their lives, let's not get judgemental.

I have clearly outlined when the cats get fed. Once in the morning, once in the evening and they have biscuits during the day. They are also hunting cats, the small one brought in a squirrel last week.

I take the point about wet being less calorific than dry though and will address this.

My cat gets a mix of wet and dry. A tin lasts for about four meals and is mixed with a handful of dry. Is fed twice a day
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

  • Thank you everyone for your replies, it's really interesting to see the variety of ways that your cats are fed :-)

Mine gets fed on demand, always has done from the start. She has never been overweight, in fact she's always been a lean cat.

She asks for dry to be there all the time, and can ask for 3 to 4 pouches a day. However often only eats half or even less as prefers the gravy in them too the actual 'meat'.

Then she will randomly ask for treats.....which she may or may not eat dependant on what is offered and her mood....:D.

I would always demand feed cats, unless weight became a problem. And would always have dried down 24/7.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

The wet-food only cat is 23lbs and the wet/dry cat is about 9lbs. Neither is overweight.

    23lb is obese.

We had a cat in the 70s (I know, ages ago, but this is how it used to be done in Ye Olden Days) - and we bought only tins of food. Whiskas, Felix, etc.

He used to get one can/day which would be fed to him mostly in two portions of half a can each time.

I also used to go and feed other people's cats when they were on holiday and I had the same instructions from them: twice a day, half a can.

If our cat were "pestering" for food, we'd just give him 1-2 spoons out of the can, so when it was time for the next half can he'd be a bit "short changed" as it still all balanced out as one can/day and not "extra bits" because he'd pestered.

That reminds me (as you say years ago) of living as a kid with my parents and our cats then.

However...cats were fine, survived just fine, cat treats were not even in the plan or heard of in my world thinking about it. :D.

It is possible that cats are taking over the world. As I have said for a long time, if they had thumbs, we would be in deep ssshit.

Ours got the chicken giblets on a Sunday if we had chicken and if it had giblets.

It'd occasionally get tossed a small bit of cheese if it were round your feet when you were making a cheese sandwich.

I believe my sibling liked to give it a piece of her chocolate mice - but she'd have not had many of those as sweets were a precious/rare commodity back then, so it's probably a memory I have where it got a bit of chocolate on half a dozen occasions.

He'd also be allowed assorted/safe scraps from meals... if/when there were any. Scraps were rare back then, you ate everything.

Lol....yes, thinking about it as a kid our cats got the giblets....and would howl and love them. Chickens don't come with them now....why is that?

My cat now, has been brought up on commercial foods...won't touch Real food at all. If I gave her giblets she would freek. I have given her live prawns, dead uncooked stuff, cooked stuff too. Only interested in manufactured cccrap. She will eat a bit of cheese if it is the size of a pin head. ...that's it.

The one I have currently has had bought food from around 4-5 wks old. I blame that, as she just won't eat real food of any kind.

  • My two are self-feeders. I keep their bowls topped up with dry food (they insist on different flavours each time though, else they wont touch it!) A couple of times a week, I add water to the dry food though as one of my boys is forever at the drinking fountain (will only drink running water) but I never see PFor drink at all and I worry he isnt getting enough fluids with a dry food diet.

I dont do wet food as it doesnt agree with Minstral, however, they do get regular treats of a tin of tuna to share or the "spare" chicken breast fillet that I accidentally bought! :-)
