Removing paint from wooden ceiling

Options
Got a wooden ceiling in the bathroom with some moldy white paint. I want to see what the wood is like underneath and if its decent strip the paint and have the plain wood. First, how do I remove it? Its not gloss. Second, what should I treat the wood with to stop rot and prevent mold if possible.

Cheers

  • It all depends if the wood is carved or flat. If flat, rub a small area with hot air gun and check for quality. You can then hire a small planer and make loads of dust. If the wood is full of details, then hot air gun/nitromors is the solution. Not an easy job being a ceiling but might well be worth the hardwork.
  • Treat finish wood with a good liquid wax and that should do the job.
  • That sounds kinda complicated for me. What sort of price would someone charge for stripping and treating the ceiling (I dont what the bloke to strip then do the ceiling. Unless the bloke is a bird. and swedish). Its flat wood but consists of a series of planks. The room is about 2m x 3m.

    Thanks again

What sort of wood is it, and what's behind it? Do you know? If it's like a tongue and groove cladding then I'd be inclined to rip it out and put up some new stuff, or get it boarded and skimmed.

  • I dont know to both questions. I might just try and scrape some paint off today and have a look.
