gauge would go bendy bendy if it ran out of water the engine fan would come on and also its quite possible engine goes into limp before head gasket says wooooooooooo
but then you know this as you let it get to this and called the aa ,but that would destroy a good story and a worthless claim
thinking on the gauge is obviously faulty causing temp to build up thus finding weakest link, the expansion bottle, then water pump,then thermostat
you arent driving car are you?
