Then institute a better system for making sure food doesn't go to waste.
I have a system where the tins I buy *today* get put behind the ones in the cupboard, which then work their way to the front, so the oldest will be used first.

Would depend what it is. Anything like tinned grapefruit or baked beans I wouldn't risk, things that are acidic or have vinegar in. When you open tins you're advised to decant any unused contents into a non-metallic bowl because of the potential for chemical reactions with the metal once the contents are subjected to the air.

which they arent in a closed tin!!

tinned fruit and baked beans are probably the last things to worry about.. fruit just goes even sloppier than it usually is and beans are already cooked

I was born in the 50's and when I was a kid and older tins didn't have dates on you just used them unless blown or damaged. Like fruit and veg from the green grocers does have used by dates unlike supermarkets these days. I ignore dates and go by smell and taste and common sense. x
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

A lot of cans are made of steel then coated, if something acidic has been stored for a long time, cans you say for definite if there couldn't be some sort of reaction between the contents and the can if the coating isn't perfect?

I'm pretty relaxed about use by dates, but several years is pushing it a bit in my book, and why risk your health when they probably only cost a few pence in the first place?

Tins show signs of deterioration when the contents are icky.. I threw a couple of very rusty/blown tins out a few weeks ago.. 1 tin of mixed red berries and one I can't remember.

The 2013 tinned strawberries were perfectly fine.. but darkened and mushy.. I don't like them anyway but they didn't kill OH's mother ;) We had a new tin to compare with and there was no noticable difference in the juices it was stored in.

You open them and assess the contents if the tins are perfectly fine before binning perfectly fine food. Cost is irrelevant.

As long as the tins don't have a dent, blown, or show rust or grey spotting, you will be fine

Due to mums compulsion to stockpile tins I have salmon here bb 2011 which will get used eventually

    +1 for a solid tin & a judicious look & sniff.

For pity's sake, either stop using the corner cupboard for tins, install a gadget for getting things in & OUT more easily or do this exercise every April 1 or some other arbitrary date.

I did this a couple of years ago, & did not take steps so I now have to do it all over again - happily teenage boys eat & seemingly thrive on Almost Anything...
