Hi there,
My honda Civic rear tyre keeps on losing the presuure slowly. The pressure loss is very slow. Drops by about 2 PSI over a weekfrom 30 to 28. It has happened over the last 3-4 weeks.

What I can think of it is either a very tiny puncture or a valve leak.

What I want to ask is that whether my breakdown policy will cover the repair or would they just refund the tyre change. I am with Autoaid and have homestart cover on the policy which I think is upto £45.

Thanks
I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T

they wont do a tyre repair on the roadside i wouldnt think.
put a little liguid(im too polite to say spit;) on the valve and watch for air bubbling out.
it maybe the tyre just needs removed and reseated on the rim.

I'm with Custardy on this. Possibly a leaking bead due to alloy corrosion if it has alloys.

And no, it's not covered by warranties or breakdown policies. Tyres are consumable items and not covered.
  • The best thing to do it to take the tyre off and inspect it for any forign objects (nails etc). If you cant see anything it could be the valve - you can get replacement for the inside of the valve from a motor factors very cheaply - they just screw in (you will need a tool for this but they are cheap too).

Otherwise you could go to kwik fit or somewhere and get them to check for a leak and replace the entire valve - should cost less than £10.

In my experiance the valve is usually to blame for this sort of leak, i think it unlikely it will be a corroded rim but if there is corrosion it should be pretty obvious just by looking.

Not always obvious , I recently had a problem with the tyre leaking at the beading on an alloy wheel which would have been impossible to spot just by looking at it.

I found out where the leak was by taking the wheel off and pouring a fairy liquid and water mix around the rim / tyre bead and could then see small bubbles where the leak was.

I got it fixed at a local tyre depot , they cleaned up the rim on the inside of the alloy and painted a sealer on it , cost me £5.

  • I thought a pressure drop like this would be relatively normally certainly 1-2psi over the course of a couple of weeks driving?
But that could depend on conditions and the distances that your travelling.

same thing happened to me recently, while on holiday in france and got my local independent tyre company to check it out. They find a nail in the tyre and repaired the puncture for me

Thanks But it is happening only in one tyre and not all

  • Check you car's manual. It will probably say you should check your tyre pressure weekly anyway. All tyres will lose pressure gradually, 1-2psi a week may be within expected losses.
