Except that you'd expect a basic check that a refurb machine is working correctly. It sounds like the refurb only involved dusting the outside of the case and making sure it powered up. At least they sent a no quibble replacement drive.

There are some excellent refurbishers. I got a very cheap refurb i7 machine from an ebay seller and that was absolutely spotless inside.

Do you have a link to that seller ?
Do they only sell computing products ?

Yes...but the Optiplex 755 is a small desktop and the optical drive is a standard desktop type.

The 755 came in tower, standard desktop and small desktop versions.

if the drive doesn't show up under my computer or when you go into device manager its a software problem in windows. Had it myself a while ago and found an easy fix online. You will have to edit the registry and then it works again, symptoms were just as you described. A new DVD wont help if its a registry problem.

this is copied from someone with the same problem ...

BUT ALWAYS make a backup of the windows registry before editing and create a system restore point.

    STEP 1.
Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box.
Type regedit in the Run box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi
Right-click atapi, point to New, then click Key.
Type Controller0, and then press Enter.
Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then click DWORD(32-bit) Value .
Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter.
    Right-click EnumDevice1, click Modify....
Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Restart the computer.

    STEP 2.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems and download fixit. It was unable find the problem but, just go through it.

    then STEP 3.
    - Click Start , click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
    - At the command prompt, type the following six commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.

    powercfg.exe -setacvalueindex 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442 DAB60367-53FE-4fbc-825E-521D069D2456 0

After the restart the problem was solved.

The drive is probably fine a windows update deleted it. Google it..

A registry tweak will get it working again...

delete lowerfilters in the registry? google eill give exact details. Ive had a couple of people call me after an update last year.
