  • Hello to everyone I am new here and never expected to be in this situation.
I am almost 30 with 3 children and another due in July.
baby no 5 due in 3 months

So children have risen from 4 to 5 in a few posts?

Call me suspicious, but people normally do know how many children they have................in the real world.

    Hi,

Definitely go with stepchange dmp. I had close to 40k of debt 6 years ago, but now I'm making my final payment in a few months time. It's a long hard slog but you can come out the other end with the opportunity for a clean slate having paid it all back.

One of the best things is the lack of stress having to deal with all the creditors, this is where stepchange do a great job. You just make your single payment every month and you can live a normal life.

Good luck and be sensible. It's a hard lesson to learn.
  • As previously suggested - it would be helpful if you got all the exact figures and filled in a statement of affairs - This is much easier for us to read and help you
  • I also second the opinion of consulting step-change or similar (make sure its free). I understand you want to do the best for your kids and my heart goes out to you. But there are options for you please don't be terrified by debt as I have been there as you can see in my signature and there is always an option suitable for you :)

It's not at all clear yet whether visualkitty has contacted a debt management company for help.

In my opinion you need to do this right away - much more urgently that posting a statement of affairs. Stepchange, Christians Against Poverty (CAP), National Debtline - they're all free and extremely helpful.

With 23k of debt you are going to find it difficult to clear it yourself. The charities mentioned above make it so much easier because they have more clout to negotiate with creditors on your behalf.

I am not sure about the others but CAP also provide strong ongoing support, and also sometimes emergency food deliveries and other services at the start of your debt-free journey, if you're really struggling.

    .

Well that's not strictly true, you complete an income/expenditure form, and all stepchange do, or any other DMC paid or not, is present that to the creditor, along with the pro rata amount they are to be paid.

There is no negotiation, the figures presented are the figures presented, anyone can do it no matter who you are.

I will bow to your superior knowledge, but it seems to me a creditor is free to reject the figures presented, aren't they?

With 23k of debt, and in rented accommodation, the question is whether there is enough surplus income to complete a dmp in a reasonable time, or whether an insolvency option would be better.

We've no way of knowing without a statement of affairs.
