Dealing with Hygroscopic damp.

  • Have you had the chimney breast sampled and checked for damp? A moisture meter is not really conclusive evidence.

    Thank you to everyone for your replies.

    After taking on board your advice, doing further research and talking to the contractors when they came round to quote; we have decided to strip back the walls to the bare brick work - we are doing this to approx 500mm above where we got the last damp reading.

    We are then going to inject into the mortar using a recommended damp cream and then use a damp sealant such as the Polycell one recommended up thread.

    Finally we will then replaster using a sand/cement mix.

    It should save us a considerable amount of money so many thanks to all for your advice.
