I have been apply for part time roles as I'm a single father.

If possible on the application explain that's why you are looking for part-time. I know that won't help with online questionnaires but it might help for jobs without.

I'm looking to return to work because they are cutting my husband's pay (that's a whole another story). I have a HND in Graphic Design and I have also been self-employed.

I don't want to return to self-employment and I have never worked a day as a Graphic Designer.

I have been applying for cleaning jobs because they are either early morning or evenings - something which we could fit round my husband's work without needing to pay for childcare.

Where possible I have explained that I am looking to return to work after having children. I have an interview today for a cleaning job.

If possible I also leave off my HND - for example forms often ask for relevant qualifications - well it's not relevant so I don't put it I usually just mention GCSEs in Maths and English because most jobs want at least a basic understanding of Maths and English.

Also have you consider places that need a large number of employees because of high turn over? Such as a call centre - some don't even care if you spell your name wrong. I wish I was joking but someone at the call centre I worked at spelt their name wrong on the application form. If you are just willing to turn up they will give you a job.

    Hi all.

Certainly a bunch of mixed answers and I'm surprised by a few...

I have work in retailed, sales and call centre environments since I was 16 (Going on 30 this year). Before, during and after my studies. I have chosen these roles due to my experience in retail environments as well as understanding how those businesses are ran and maintained.

I moved just over a year ago due to my partner passing and needed a fresh start. I have spent time with my daughter and now in a position that my mother has relocated to be closer and allow me to get back into work again.

On these applications, as this decisions tend to be on most occasion, especially the online generated questionnaires, are computer generates so do not take into consideration on my input and why I'm applying for the job until it will land in front of someone and they can make their decision with what they see with their own eyes.

A number of you ask why KFC? I applied for that role because it was a vacancy that was in travelling distance from work and with the outcome I mentioned already above it was a trigger to post here and see what people thought. I don't tend to post into forums so this is a first for me.

I have applied for all my previous job roles by CV either by website substitution or email and when invited for a face to face interview I have always been successful.

Maybe I'm venting some stress by typing to you all. I do appreciate your help and kind words.

I can understand why KFC, I'm also looking for local jobs to reduce traveling times due to childcare needs. Sometimes you just want a job that won't need 40+ hours plus commuting time so you can spend time with your family. You don't really mind too much what it's doing as long as the hours are right.

If they give you no feedback whatsoever is it possible you failed simply because there were too many other applicants? There might easily be 200 applicants for 2 or 3 roles and over half those applicants give good answers but most be failed by the computer simply because it has been asked to pick out only a small number of applications to go forward. The employer isn't necessarily searching for the very best person they can get, but someone decent.

  • Don't let it get you down, some online interview processes seem pretty silly, some are made by people who swallowed a dictionary and others who have maybe swallowed LSD.

One application I done was so bizarre I gave up taking it serious and when it asked for any criminal records, I put down a Johnny Cash song.

Honestly, you will find work, its a matter of perseverance, something I've been through. I've failed more interviews than most. Maybe its my honesty, but I cannot lie and praise every company willing to pay me just over a min-wage.

My last job interview has role playing, I struggled to see how how our imagined skills in saving imaginary people in some imaginary disaster would help us answer phone calls to a power company.

We did do some online test once we were hired and put into training. Tutor left the room and everyone asked the answers to questions we were struggling on.

Might do a thread on call centre workers and any advice that can be given to people calling and those poor souls trying to do an honest job in an often dishonest work environment were profit from customers is the real aim no matter what the glossy adverts tell us.

So, son of odin, bear in mind that failing a KFC assessment online is really nothing to worry about and absolutely no reflection on your undoubted abilities.

Keep on keeping on, something will turn up.
