Any Idea On Reducing Train Fare On The West Coast Line
Has anyone got any tips on reducing their Train Fare on the Airdrie - Edinburgh line.
I've heard a few people mention you can try getting an Airdrie - Shotts ticket and it goes via Edinburgh thereby reducing the cost by about a 1/3, but when I checked this route out on the main train ticket seller's websites, they also seem to be routed via Glasgow.
Doesn't seem to quite fall under the Tickety Split side of things.
Anyone heard of anything similar?

Getting a ticket to somewhere beyond Edinburgh wouldn't help anyway - the tickets don't allow you to get off at intermediate stops. (They're cracking down on it at my local station).
But as far as I'm aware all you can do to reduce your fare is travel off peak & use a railcard if you're entitled to any. Season ticket if you travel frequently - or flexipass if they're available on that route but you'd need to ask at the ticket office, they are only available on a small number of routes. Or get the bus
Suggest you post on the public transport board - there is much more activity there, someone may have some ideas. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=225
(Incidentally - it doesn't really matter but if you call it the "west coast line" people will think you mean Glasgow to Birmingham/London)
Good luck0 -
Yeah, it did seem a wee bit like clutching at straws to be fair.
Thanks for your help slbhill, I'll try that forum and, if unsuccessful, resign myself to a life of paying full-fare!0 -
There is a Facebook page for Airdrie Station and also one for Airdrie, you may get a better response there.0
