Removing Chimney

I have a semi-detached house in a T-shaped orientation with my neightbour. My chimney is at the apex of my roof. I want to remove the chimney and I'm happy to do some of the manual labour but do not have the skills to patch up the roof or modify the roof timbers to account for the missing chimney ( I think the roof timbers are currently attached to it and are using it for support). I have asked for a quote to remove the top part of the chimney and have been given a quote of £2100 plus vat to remove the chimney to just below the roof line and to patch up the roof. This includes scaffold hire.
I don't think that this includes changing the support structure of the roof which will probably be necessary and I have a sneeking suspicion that this will leave me with a bigger bill once we get going. What would be a good price for:
- removing the chimney to floor level in the loft
- patch the roof
- add support to the roof to replace the support currently given by the chimney
- pay for the scaffold hire?
Also a 7m scaffolding tower on ebay seems to be about £500. why wouldn't I just buy the tower use it and then sell it once I'm finished with my various projects?

Hi
I have just had a huge chimney removed down to joist level in the loft. They done all the other work you have mentioned including scaffold. Work took 1.5 days due to weather but the total I paid was £1824. I am based on the South Coast so I am sure you could possibly get it cheaper.
My quotes ranged from £1700 up to £2500.I am only trying to help :rolleyes:0 -
A scaffold tower can be VERY dangerous to use if untrained and unaware of their limitations.
Refine your inquiry an get a couple more quotes and take their advice.
The bricks maybe a useful salvageable item.If not don't underestimate to dispose.
The pots may make nice planters.
The chimney will be structural so be warned and get/use an expert. No harm in asking for references.0
