Arnold Clark question

Options
So here's a question....

I was in an Arnold Clark the other day and paid £1000 deposit on a car, the machine gave an error when i paid it but the bank gave an authorisation code and said it would be fine. Arnold Clark gave me a receipt and i said i would be in touch for the rest of the payment. They didn't seem too amused i wasn't taking their finance.
The following day i find another car the same in another Arnold Clark branch and after talking with my Mrs i go and see it and decide to buy it also, one for me, one for her. (I didnt tell the new branch about the other one, mainly because i didnt want to as its none of their business).
I pay £952 deposit to round the numbers up. Finance company are all in place for the new one and i have a loan being sorted for the original one.
Now just looking at my account, the £952 has came out but not the £1000 but i have had a voicemail from the original arnold clark advising they are aware i have bought another car and to remind me that the £1000 has been authorised, it was quite rude to be fair.
Now before anyone says, i can see why they are questioning the sale but i found it quite abrupt.
If say i decided after all to cancel the original sale due to how rude the voicemail was, can they still claim the £1000 deposit? or even take it from the other branch?

  • If you pull out of the deal they are entitled to keep/recover their reasonable losses.
  • Where can they recover any losses from though if the money is back in my bank account?
Its a completely different branch that has the money that has actually left my account.
Dont get me wrong i love both cars but i dont like rude people and it can put me off spending money with them.
  • If they wanted to court.

Just phone them back explain to them that you are the customer and you have free will to buy as many cars as you want. Tell them you don't like their attitude but have decided to go ahead with the first sale despite their rudeness.

    As above.

I'd email them though basically telling them how many cars you buy is none of their business and you suggest they wind their necks in and start talking to you like civilised human beings and if they cannot do that then to have a manager get in touch as you won't tolerate their abrupt and demeaning attitude.

Arnold Clark is best avoided. Notoriously bad.

only if you go in with your eyes closed and let them walk all over you, had 3 cars off them with no problems.

any problems post purchase will be difficult to resolve satisfactorily. Customer service is very poor.

Have friends with first hand experience plus did work for a local council department for 4 years that dealt with consumer complaints.

I would use Arnold Clark but only for car hire.
Sadly my avoidance of the chain restricts my local choice of cars as they almost monopolise the market.
