Formatted SD card

Hi,

A friend had formatted her SD memory card accidentally and its got loads of pictures on.

Im not ware of any 'freeware' software to recover it without paying ( the 'free' version shows the files so must have just overwritten the FAT table )

Anyone know any free recovery tools please?

I taught digital photography for a couple of years and part of the sessions was a practical task on recovering photographs from memory cards that had been formatted - we ALWAYS used Recuva. So I 100% second kwibreaks post above. Recuva is brilliant and I have seen it work successfully time and time again. In layman's terms think of a memory card as a printed story book. When you are formatting a disk, all you are doing is tearing out the contents page at the front of the boot, so the computer no longer knows where to find the data / photographs. HOWEVER all the photographs and data remains on the card. That said, you must STOP using the card for any other task immediately. If you continue to use the card before recovering the photos, you stand a high risk of permanently damaging some or all of the 'deleted' files. Hope that's a help. Recuva is 100% the way to go and it is totally free :)

When I used Recuva it seemed to restore a lot of photos, but all I really had were thumbnails. Photorec/Testdisk was able to restore the photos properly.
