Depends where in London you're staying.

We're staying in London in May bank holiday next to the Excel Centre for 4 nights in a Travelodge for £160.

We stayed at this Premier Inn when we did the Harry Potter Studio tour a couple of years ago. If memory serves me correctly, there is a big Tesco opposite. It is a nice Premier Inn (I don't like Travelodge at all) and we also had the breakfast. It worked out cheaper having breakfast there as we had 2 children with us and they ate free. We walked to Watford Junction and got the HP bus to and from the studios.
We travelled into London for a day also. No problems at all. We left our bag at the Transport Museum as we had an annual ticket there. We returned to Kings Cross in the evening for our return journey to the North East. It was a great trip!

We spent a weekend in london last year and stayed in the travelodge in watford. Was only 15 mins on the fast train to london, was 5 mins walk to watford junction from hotel. Were planning on taking the kids for the weekend in oct and staying at watford again, but this time thinking of the holiday inn express right next to watford junction.
