Ski Holiday Help

Hi,
My girlfriend and I both work in schools and have recently been on ski trips with our respective schools. We have both caught the skiing bug and are looking to book our first ski holiday but are unsure how to go about booking. We are both competent skiers and enjoy a drink or two so somewhere with a good evening scene would be a bonus.
Can anyone recommend any resorts/accommodation they have been to/know of and who they booked through? Also, what sort of prices would we be looking at for a week with say a 5 day ski pass?
Cheers
Steven

Steve,
It depends a lot on where and when you go. Early Jan and late March (avoiding the holidays) are usually cheapest.
We regularly go to France and Austria - a catered chalet can be had for about £600 for a week, if you book flights and accomodation seperately yourself you can get a self catered apartment for under £400. Lift passes are around £180-200.
I'm a big fan of Austria, and would recommend Mayrhofen and St Anton. It always seems to be cleaner, cheaper and better organised than France. To be honest wherever you go, they'll almost certainly cater for you to have an evening drink!
The past few years we've booked with Alpine Elements. Previous to that we've gone DIY, and prior to that with Neilson. There's a few other big names available (Crystal Ski) and a whole host of small independants.

J2Ski has a great forum, full of keen skiers, always happy to help new converts, and full of lots of advice and encouragement. The home page is here:

I know this because my o/h is a ski-nut - he's like a Jehovah's witness for skiing; lots of friendly, positive advice over there, and from people with a lot of experience.
If you are both tied to school term times, be prepared to budget for needing to be there in peak times. The best deals he's ever had have been in the week of Christmas itself - everything else is very busy, and not as cheap as it would be a week or two earlier or later.Reason for edit? Have a look at igloo ski, they often have good deals. We like to go to catered chalets, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, 3/4 course dinner with wine for around £650, but you need to add lift pass and ski school.
If you are limited to school hols it would be more. We love Austria too, Solden may have good deals.0
