When we drove to Venice we parked the car in a hotel car park opposite the train station on the mainland, 1 stop before Venice. It was really easy, and quite cheap. There were trains every 10 mins or so. Saves a boat journey if you get sea sick.

We went to Croatia last year for our holiday.

We did not drive, but found the bus service to be cheap and very good.

We went to Zagreb then onto Zador and then to Rejeka.

I highly recommend Croatia - it is a very pretty country and the prices are very cheap - lots of Italians go there on holiday and there is a strong Italian influence - and lots of Italian Ice cream!
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

We went from Zagreb to Ljubljana to Venice on public transport last summer, we had to get a bus, train, tram/funicular railway, train and then a water bus around the island. It was amazing and even though there was a lot of changing I'm glad we did it that way instead of hiring a car as we were able to get a much better local experience.

  • We did Venice, Trieste, Izola (Slovenia day trip to Piran), Rovinj (day trip to Porec), Fazana (day trip to Brijuni) and Pula (going on to Plitvicka and Zagreb) by public transport.

Turned up to the bus station on the 2nd June in Trieste to find it was a national holiday and the long distance buses to Slovenia didn't run. So we had to do local buses and walk over the border, with about six other foreigners. Quite an adventure.

On a previous trip to Croatia, had a problem on Brac, there was a local saints day and the bus service was very reduced, so we had a long hot walk.

If you're basing yourself in one place, you'll have options on which days you do things. But it is something to bear in mind.

Hope you love it, we went their on holiday as a family every year until the civil war, then have been back many times since as an adult and travelled around all the Balkan states after university. People are really friendly, the seafood is excellent and it is breathtakingly beautiful. Also in your pocket website does a free downloadable guide to Trieste and Venice so you can check out things to see/do in advance.
