Press and hold both the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds or so. My iPhone did something similar last week, doing the above got it to reboot OK.

As TadleyBaggie said hold both buttons but sometimes you need to press them for up to a minute rather than just 10 seconds. As soon as the apple logo appears let go and it should start up fine.
  • Thank you chaps, just waiting for it to boot up fingers crossed I am having to do it each time I want to get on to it. Hey ho, it was fine till I installed the new update.

Have you tried uninstalling the update, or, failing, that doing a factory reset?

You can't uninstall an update on IOS, you would have to reinstall the previous version IOS which may or not be possible (depending on whether Apple are still signing the previous version).
  • Then I guess it's a factory reset.
