No longer 13 month MOT?

I've just got my wifes car MOT'd. The current MOT expires on the 3 oct 2007 so I took the car in a month early in case there were any problems.
The car passed and I was given a new MOT certificate that expires 3 sept 2008.
I thought if you did this the new MOT would run for 12 month after the current one expires. That is certainly how it used to work. Have the rules changed?

Hope not. I`ve got my bike in the garage now for it`s MOT as I want any work done before I start college. The man in the workshop told me I would still get an MOT until Oct 2008.

It's still the case by the looks of things:
An MOT can be carried out at any time

If the vehicle is tested within the calendar month prior to when the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate. For example, if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2007, and the vehicle was presented on or after 2 March 2007, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2008.

The same rule would also apply when the vehicle is taken in within a calendar month of its first MOT. In this case, the vehicle owner would need to present their registration document.

you get a year from the date of the test. if you want it post dated, then you have to produce the old MOT certificate, and your logbook. i also think you can only have the test done 15 days in advance now.

Did you give them your soon to expire MOT certificate?

If so they'll add 12 months to when it shows it will expire.

If not then they just start the 12 months from the date the MOT has been done.

The bit about the old cert is right, the rest isn't.

Though you would think in this computerised age it would add the extra time automatically.

If your old MOT is one of the new computerised certificates, which it should be as they have been issuing them for nearly 2 years now, but due to phasing you may be right on the end of the changeover period, then the system automatically dates the expiry date of the new certificate as 12 months from the expiry date of the old certificate. You do not need the old certificate or the V5 Registration Document.

This is how the DVLA know which cars are MOT'd or not and also allows them to issue your new Road Fund Licence on line without you having to produce your documents, including the MOT certificate.

I suggest the OP should go back to the issuing garage and enquire why the expiry date was not 12 months from date of old certificate expiry. Something seems amiss here to me.
  • Took both my car and OH's car for MOT test earlier in the year. On both occaisions I took then in about 10 days before the previous certificate had expired. I had to take in the old certificate both times in order not to lose the 10 days.

My car has just had its MOT 10 days early, I didn't take any documents with me as I was away from home and the expiry date is a year from the date of the old MOT certificate.

Did you take the old cert with you and show it?

Maybe you were a day early..within a calender month would mean you would have to have it done the earliest today 4th. So if it was done yesterday, you were a day early, if it was done today and you presented the old cert you should have had the extension.

Back in April I was told that there was no need to show the old MOT certificate as the new MOT is dated automatically via the DVLA database.

They didn't see the old certificate and issued the 13 month certificate without even being told the expiry of the old one
