Parking charge notice - Vehicle Control Services - PAY OR NOT?

Hello,
I've seen lots of similar situations regarding the following private parking fine problem and it seems to be a very grey area. Please can anybody offer any advice or details of their personal experiences?
Last week I was shopping in Selby at a retail park where you do not have to pay to park and was there for 2 hours and 39 minutes. Yesterday morning a letter arrived via post saying that I have to pay £60 to Vehicle Control Services Ltd (VCS) within the next 14 days for staying over 2 hours and that if I don't pay within that timeframe the charge will go up to £100.
From what I've read online there are lots of frustrated motorists experiencing the same thing with this and other parasitic companies, and the general gist of what I have read is to not pay, ignore the letters that follow from both VCS and the solicitor because they have very little chance of winning in court. I've also read that fines of this nature have very little standing as they are imposed by third parties that are contracted by retail/land owners to oversee their car parks rather than being imposed by the council or police.
Any advice on this one is much appreciated

there are no "fines" of this nature, only an INVOICE
please read the IPC and IAS advice in the newbies sticky thread at the top of this forum
that thread covers ALL eventualities
VCS are IPC members, so just do the initial appeal
do not ignore, do not pay
the ideal get out for this is a landowner cancellation, so try that too
otherwise its 6 years of hassle, possibly civil court
as mentioned above, a lot of lies and mistakes in what you have read so far
so read that NEWBIES sticky thread, to get the real truth0
