Hanging doors

This is most probably a really silly question but what order but hanging doors and painting frames, what order do you do it in?
I've always thought paint the framework leave dry for a few days then hang the doors, 2 people have now told me it should be the other way round but without being able to tell me why!
Does it even matter?

I suppose it depends on whether you have nice shiny brass hinges that you don't want to get paint on or horrible steel hinges that you want to hide with the paint.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

All doors and hinges are brand new, all waiting to be hung for the first time...Good point about getting paint on the hinges...nice shiny chrome, so paint first it is then.
Thankyou, it's such an obvious answer but I've that much going on with the house that my brain has become scrambled over the last couple of days.

Personally I'd say, hang the doors first, make sure the fit is good as all your notches are cut out and ready to go, then take the doors off, paint everything and then re-attach the doors afterwards.

If you paint before hanging, you might get scuffs on the frame if the door needs planing, if you paint after hanging, you get the possibility of paint on shiny hinges, so a combination of both seems best.

    As pmartin86 says........

Always hang the doors first . If you do it the other way round you can never "touch up" the paintwork properly.

I wouldn't bother taking the doors off to paint .Just take care cutting in around the hinge recesses or use masking tape to cover the hinges, lock face plate etc.

Second vote for masking up the hinges after hanging the door.

Just to add to the OP's confusion. I would do a bit of both. Under coat and rub down first (repeat if necessary), hang door, fit door stop and prep, then gloss.
exception to this would be in areas of high humidity and thought it prudent to seal the wood under the hinges in which case would prime, hang door including all the furniture then remove it all again, touch up areas of work, re fit furniture and hang.

Presuming you are fitting new doors, make sure they fit the doorstops in the door liner.New doors are mostly slightly thinner than old doors.I always make sure they fit snug and are cut to suit flooring, then remove handles/lock but mask up hinges.
