Nhs retirement

Options
Hi All
I am a newbie in need of advice if anyone can help.
I am now 59 years and at present on sick leave due to ?TIA and awaiting results. In the last 2 years I have developed hypertension, chronic kidney disease stage 3 and Diabetes and feel my health is rapidly declining. I really feel that a stressful nhs job is taking a toll on my health,
I need to know could I apply for nhs retirement on the grounds of ill health. My state pension will not be paid until I am 66 :question:years old. Would I qualify for applying for extra benefits of retirement in the nhs pension scheme? Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

    Hi Kay
Sorry to hear you are unwell.

I would have thought that you could apply for ill health retirement - indeed that is what your NHS pension is for.
Your employer and/or OH Dept. should be able to help you.
You do not need all this worry - hope you get things actioned and start to make progress very soon x

A good idea to have your union's backing if you want to apply for early retirement on the grounds of ill health.

    Hi
Thank you misbiggles1 and shawbarbara for your advice. I intend to discuss with my union. It is so confusing with the retirement age increasing. If the pension age had not been increased by 6 years I would not hesitate to retire. Financially, I want to secure as much funding until my state pension of 66years,
Is anyone else in the nhs pension scheme and know about the ill health retirement criteria?
    Thanks again
    Anita

Sounds right to me. In fact, if she's almost 60, it'll be 67.

    Hi
Thanks for the link to the nhs pensions fact sheet will look into it. I have checked and I will be 66 years before I can get state pension. I was born in August 1956, the retirement age is phased in over 5 years. I get to do the maximum! I could have retired without problems financially if I got the state pension at 6o years plus my normal nhs pension. That is why I am looking into ill health retirement as it could mean I get extra pension for the 6 years based on the inability to work.

Earliest age for nhs pension is 60 in the 1995 scheme unless you have mental health officer status in which case its 55.
I'm told it is very difficult to get ill health retirement from nhs nowadays and even if you got it they would be unlikely to make up the pay period to beyond age 60
