I need someone to point me in the right direction here. Ive just received a message informing me that my o2 email account is to be closed in June. Ive had this email address for about 12 years. In told I need to create a new email address with another email platform. Is this correct? I was hoping to use my existing o2 email address but have been told its definatly going to be stopped soon.
So, Where do you suggest I go from here? Im currently with Plusnet as my ISP but would like a different free email host if thats at all possible? Im using Windows live mail to get my emails at the moment, having had them sent over from o2. Can anyone tell me if there is a better way to get my emails and preferably have an email address that wont have to be changed later on? Gordon T.

Have a look at gmail.com or gmx.co.uk or gmx.com.
They will give you a free email service that you won't need to change.
If you have more than one email, then Thunderbird will collect them all.0 -

That sounds right. If an email provider closes, you lose your email address and have to create a new one with a different provider. (Very annoying, I know.)So, Where do you suggest I go from here? Yes -- it's not a good idea to use your ISP's email account as they may disable it if you change to a different ISP (or, as O2 have, at any random time).
You have two options, really. One is to get a free email address from somewhere like GMX.co.uk (or wherever you like). Hopefully GMX (et al) won't go bust any time soon, so you'll be able to keep the same email address for a while, and it won't matter if you switch ISP.
If you want a "guarantee" that you will never have to change email addresses ever again, you could buy a domain name (say, gordont.co.uk) and set up email forwarding to a free GMX (or other) email account. The only downside (apart from a bit of hassle in setting it up) is that you have to pay an annual fee form your domain. Until recently this was about £3 a year (for a .co.uk address), but I think that has just doubled. There's no way of knowing what future charges might be.0 -
There are going to be an increasing incidence of email closures/Price rises as many providers are realising that the email address is no longer the pull that it once was to sell their product.
As esuhl says the way forward would be your own domain, or, one of the free independent services, Gmail and Gmx probably being the two with some longevity to their future, as much as anything in the tech sphere has longevity...Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Thanks for this and to the people posting on the thread as I have just set up a gmx account and configured it to download into Thunderbird, now to start changing everything from o2 including my domain name. Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama0
