In the world of contracts where it's almost guaranteed that the OP would already have agreed to assist their insurers in any court action resulting from any claim made on or against their policy.

You have been hanging round too many park toilets ;)

Contractual? maybe so, I can't see any specifics in my contract so whether or not they are legally enforceable may be very different.

As far as I am aware the procedure here is moot, only court appointed officials can force you to go.
The insurers may try tactics to "persuade" you to do so, just make sure you get it in writing they will pay any expenses you incur, even if they lose, oh and make sure you get them to include in the letter details of how you are not responsible should things not go their way, because I guarantee they will try and wiggle out of it.

    Current esure wording is:-

We have full discretion in the settlement of your claim or any legal proceedings that arise and we may take over, defend or settle the claim, or take up any claim in your name for our own benefit. You and any other person covered by this policy must give us all the information, documentation and help we need to do this.

yes I read that too, I suppose your interpretation of "help" is to give the insurers lawyers a foot rub when required.
As I have said, the courts can force him, the insurers can threaten him, I was simply pointing out that the form of behaviour outlined by the OP is IMHO unacceptable, that's not to say he was being 100% honest but I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
