swapping messages over wifi using ipad and android

I am looking for some inspiration as to what app I can use in the following scenario.

A group of 3 people with iPhones and iPad wifi tablet and 3 people with Android phone and iPad wifi tablet out in the field - one person in the office with iPhone

I need the six peopleout on the road to be able to send photos and text to the person back in the office. They will have access to wifi - I originally thought WhatsApp but that doesn't seem to work on the iPad.
Apple messages would work apart from the fact some of them have Android phones.
The people out of the office might use their phone handset OR their iPad so I am looking for a solution that is cross platform.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Facebook messenger would work on all of those devices, and so would Skype. Another option is Google hangouts.

It's dumb enough to count spaces as characters though so Skype^^^^^^^^^^^? with ^ being a blank would have worked. You only see a single space too as that is how html works.
