Potential new job would mean a daily round trip of 60 miles, just wondered what an estimate for fuel cost would be?

C4 Picasso, Diesel, 1.4HDI (I think!)

Thanks

    Too many variables.

Think google maps gives an estimated fuel cost if you plug the route into there.

A Ford Fiesta petrol does about 10 miles a litre - so about 10p a mile. More on motorways, less if you're stuck in 25 miles of traffic jams.

In an electric car, about £1.50. In a helicopter, about £2000. In anything else, somewhere in between.

To be more useful: how many miles per litre does your car do? 300 divided by that multiplied by the cost of a litre of fuel (conveniently around £1 at the moment) will tell you the weekly cost.
  • I have a diesel 206 that gets nearly 600 miles to a tank, at a cost of around 45-50ish depending what the prices are like. It all depends on the car you have though and if it is lot of motorways or not. If I was doing more driving at 30 instead of 50+ i'd only get around 450 miles to a tank.

The easiest way to estimate this is to calculate your current MPG ( use the brim-to-brim method as described here http://www.confusedaboutenergy.co.uk/index.php/real-petrol-mileage#.VvPrXqrcsdU )

It's important to calculate it yourself, don't reply on the manufacturer's claimed figure.

You can now work out how many litres you'll use to do 300 miles, and hence the cost.

It won't be exact - gentle motorway cruising will give a better MPG than stop-start city driving. But it'll give you a reasonable estimate.

If your doing private miles on top of this 300 you would probably be better off in a diesel, don't change your car for the sake of it though.

My golf tdi costs about £43-44 to fill up at the moment and does about 430 miles to a tank, on a longer run sticking to 70 however it can do 550-600 miles to a tank

Fuel costs about £0.13 per mile for a typical car. £0.08 per mile for an economical one (60 mpg), £0.24 per mile for a thirsty one (20 mpg).

So 300 miles would be somewhere in the £24 to £72 range.

You could do a test run to find out for sure
as real life figures can differ a lot compared to what manafacures claim (helps them sell the car)
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. I travel roughly 300 miles a week. 260 for work + weekend driving and driving places on my lunch break would make it there or thereabouts.

I drive a 1.2 Diesel EcoFlex Vauxhall Corsa. It costs me just over £20 per week.
