Moving Gas Meter

Hi,

Wondered if anyone could advise me of the most economical way of getting the Gas meter moved. It is currently in the living room and has vent to outside, thus making it pretty chilly near the cabinet. So we are looking to getting it move outside (on the same wall). Been quoted £520 by National Grid- wonder if we have any alternative options?

Also looking at smart meters but, and correct me if I am wrong, doesn't look like it would fix the issue as it looks like it would still be in the same place just a little smaller and would presumably still require the vents.

Any suggestions/ advice appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think anyone but the main supplier [National Grid) can touch the meter. They've got you over a barrel and charge whatever they want knowing there is no competition.
Don't know about the vents, there's nothing like that in my cupboard. We have a meter reader here on the forum, he'll know better, later.

The only other option that might (and I stress only might) be available to you would be using an independent gas transporter.

However, I wouldn't recommend this option if National Grid are prepared to do the work.
An IGT may quote cheaper, but this can restrict your choice of supplier and/or incur a surcharge on every gas bill you get in the future. (although not all suppliers now pass on the extra charge e.g. none of the expensive, big 6 pass on the IGT charge)
  • If the move is less than a metre a private gas safe engineer can do it. Personally I can t recall gas meters requiring vents to the outside. I see many under stairs and in pantries which don t appear to be vented.

You are correct about a Smart meter. That will just replace the existing meter, so won't help.

And the permission of the MAM, but even then they won't be able to alter the live incoming service.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Gas meters don't require a vent. However if you have a gas appliance in the same room, that may require it.

Get advice from a gas engineer, you may be able to block up the vent and save 420 quid.
