which Apple Macbook to buy????

1. Macbook Pros are due an update soon - probably a bad time to buy, you could get a faster computer for the same price by waiting a day, or a week, or a month...
DO NOT buy the MacBook Pro with DVD - it's ancient and not cheap.
That leaves you with the Retina Macbook Pro - that would be the most popular one I guess, and the most powerful. It's the biggest/heaviest of their 13 inch laptops, but everything's relative, and these are still thin, light laptops IMO.
Or the Macbook air - this is thinner, lighter, less powerful with fewer ports and most importantly, loses the Retina screen. You pay a lot for a very thin laptop.
Or the new Macbook. Again it's less powerful, and it's even thinner, but does have a retina display. It doesn't have much travel on the keys because it's so thin. Also only has a USB-C port so you have to be seriously committed to wireless. A big price to pay for a really, really thin computer!0 -
I can't help with selecting a mac, but as a photographer I can tell you that a 13" screen for photo editing will be a bit cramped. My laptop is 15" and I really wouldn't want to work on anything smaller. I also have a much larger monitor at home that I use for editing when not out and about. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

Bought a new Macbook Pro with the 3 year John Lewis warranty offer a month ago - its the one with 16GB RAM, 15" though - 13" is just too small in my opinion for serious Photoshop work as its very cramped on such a small screen. The Retina display is wonderful and with 16GB RAM performance is really fast even when rendering HD video.
We have a few ancient Macs in the house as they never seem to die - oldest is a G4 Powermac desktop which still runds perfectly, as does the old G5 Powermac desktop and laptop. Unlike Windows laptops which I don't seem to have much luck with - they seem to last about 18 months -2 years before some terminal event.0 -
They keep their usefulness so don't assume you need the newest model, or the newest OS version.
You just don't want one that can't use old USB connections.
Have a look at ebay (use auctionsniper or similar to ensure you get the one you want) . Secondhand can work really well. I love macs but not their prices so I never owned a newly-bought one. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I will have a good look around and take the Mrs to the shop so she can see which one she prefers. I only said 13" because my 15 Windows laptop seems big, but I understand you ned a bigger screen for photoshop.
many thanks for all the help and information0
