Upgrading to windows 10

I'm going to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 sometime over the holidays.

I need help with what to untick so that Microsoft doesn't pass on my details to other companys / track me etc. There was a thread ages ago & a poster commented on how to keep your info safe but I can't find it.

Hopefully, those of you that have long updated to Win 10 will remember what needs to be done & will let me know.:T
:j I hope my comment helps :T

I'm sure someone will remember and chime in with the thread.

My top recommendation is to take a full backup image (for example with Macrium Reflect or similar) while on Windows 7 before you start trying to upgrade.

Then if you need to rollback for whatever reason, it's much easier and more reliable.

Not done it myself and have no immediate intention to so I have no experience of 10, but I seem to recall that when the update starts you are given a choice of standard or custom install. If you select the custom install you should then be able to untick all the boxes that look like privacy issues before proceeding.

No doubt someone will correct me if I'm talking cobblers. :)

  • Make sure you use every option to customise the installation and configure advanced installation settings.

But then, Windows 10 took my PC out of action for two weeks.

First having a Cisco VPN software tool installed took out the network connection, and then rolling back to Windows 7 took out the mouse and keyboard!

Eventually I was able to backup and upgrade again using a remote desktop, but boy was it painful.

Just go through all the options after install and read what they are for and decide if you want to alter the settings. Turn off Cortana.

That's all you have to do. It won't take very long.

To the Windows 10 fanboys, just choosing a "custom installation" would be considered paranoid!

Just let Microsoft access anything you like on your PC. Never lock your front door, either. You don't want to get paranoid, eh?

I think it needs a more grown up debate...but, I doubt this is the place that will happen.

I don't think it needs much debate. Most people just need the facts and they can choose for themselves. But some people here just like to tell others what they should think... I'm not sure I'd call that very grown up, but whatever.

I'd suggest fedora but hey I am a child, what is being missed is that certain channels suggest that W10 is a snoop, so what about Alphabet(google for the un-informed)/Bing/Amazon et al. If you have a computer either you work how it and the internet work, or you suffer the consequences. The mouse(or touch pad) finger has a disconnect from the cognisant side of the brain. Windows 10 may prove to be better than W7 but I don't care. I use W7, W10 and can help with W8 and Vista via virtual machines of course they run under fedora (or W10 or 7).

Now I need to talk to my bank and then my favourite p0rn sites using my customised linux kernel 4.5 stored on a USB stick.
