removing amtico and levelling compound

Renovating a room with amtico.

We removed a fitted unit with no amtico underneath.

We can see that there is about 1cm thick stuff under the amtico which I take to be the adhesive and levelling compound placed before the amtico was put down.

We are considering real wood this time.

My question it, how difficult is it to remove the amtico and levelling compound and taking it back to bare concrete?

Why don't you put the new floor over it?

You've got a good, level surface and there'll be a DPM under there.

if I put on top, there will be a step down into the carpeted and tiled parts of the house. If I remove the leveling compound then it will be close to level

The levelling compound may well be there to level the floor!
  • So your plan is to remove the existing floor and levelling and install a wood floor.

What method are you going to use to lay the new floor? Glued down or floating?

Either way you'll need a level floor so the easiest way will be to level up to the current floor but you want to remove all that due to a height issue with other flooring.

What are you going to do if you remove it and fine it's 1 cm out of level?

It's not difficult to remove the level, just very dusty and a right ball ache. Have you got an SDS drill with roto stop and a suitable chisel or and angle grinder with diamond concrete disc?

I see your point. I don't have that kit but do have money to pay someone to do it LOL. Was just trying to think through my options.

I hadn't considered that that the concrete floor may not be level itself. Great advice and lots to think about. Ta

You could hire a concrete floor grinder to adjust the levels if it is out then it would only need a thins skim of self levelling screed. Alternatively you could rip the floor up and reinstall it at the correct level (with insulation underneath).
