New sofa no where near as comfy as the one in the shop

Related this post but I'm asking a different question; I bought a new sofa recently and it's turned out to be MUCH less comfortable than the one in the shop.
It's so uncomfortable that I've actually had a bad back for about 5 days now - I'm not actually making this up.
The issue appears to be the seat back cushioning; they are rock hard (for cushions, obv) and rather than supporting your back, just push against it.
I went back to DFS today with the seat back cushions from my new sofa, the cushions from my old sofa (lovely and comfy) and I compared it to the one in the shop I sat on which informed my decision to buy.
The ones in shop are pretty comfy, certainly a world away from the ones I have. Three assistants all told me to varying degrees that they need to "bed in" which might take approximately a month. There's just me, and 5 seats, so that's 5 months!
The thing is, my last sofa was comfy from the moment it arrived, and various friends have said the same thing - you buy a sofa; it's comfy.
I can see what they're saying, but it's not new leather shoes; it's a cushion. Are DFS having me on? What are my rights on this?
They said they can send people out to look at it, but it just sounds like lip service.
Any advice ( save the wisecracks, please
) would be welcome.
Thanks,
Dave

Swap your cushions for the ones in the shop.If they refuse to take your hard cushions you have your answer. The display model won't have bedded in for 5 months.
If you are not satisfied ask for a refund.I'm sure they won't want an irate customer over the Easter weekend.0 -
I'm really sorry as I've no advice. But I thought this was brilliant. The fact you took your old cushion and new cushion to DFS to sit down and compare. Literally has made my night.
Hope you find your answers though. Do you sit on all 5 seats? I've my own side of the sofa, wouldn't bother with the rest. I find harder sofas nicer though as they keep the fresh look for longer. But I guess comfort would be better.0 -
Open the ones in DFS to see if the cushions inside are the same as yours. If not, request that they are changed for the same ones.0

I'd love to! But the sofa is a different color :P. I guess I could ask DFS to find another display model and I could go there, so not a bad idea.Open the ones in DFS to see if the cushions inside are the same as yours. If not, request that they are changed for the same ones.
Phil, pretty sure they will be. But good idea, I should have checked.I thought this was brilliant. The fact you took your old cushion and new cushion to DFS to sit down and compare. Literally has made my night.
Jamie's Mum - you should have seen me in Carpet Right last week - I took a square of painted plywood across South London to compare colours in the shop!
You can't be too careful...

Hope you enjoyed that even more :P0 -

OK, so the next step in this saga, and hopefully a resolution - I decided that if they needed "softening up", I would do it myself.
I took the two back cushions of the main settee and the first, I spent about 2 minutes vigorously bashing and punching it with my fists. I was quite out of breath by the end! The second, I upped a gear and put on the ground, then spent the same amount of time jumping and bouncing on, wiggling my feet as I went.
The end result is:- The punched cushion certainly feels a little softer. My back seems to bed-in more than its previous state, where I just seemed to bounce off
- The stamped cushion feels quite a lot softer. My back now feels like it has a reasonable amount of support, and I would hope with a bit more pummelling or sitting, it will soften up to a satisfactory level, and the discomfort will become a distant memory
- The original, un-punched, un-stomped cushions are still hard as rocks. Sitting against them even for a moment makes my back tense up and go into spasm.
So possibly a good, quick, solution, and if it works then in theory DFS haven't been feeding me porkies. However, from a customer satisfaction point of view, I've spent the week with a painful and knotted back, and DFS didn't have any immediate solutions
How about:- Telling me to go home and beat the cr*p out of my cushions
- Supplying the cushions or filling pre-treated
- Actually telling customers about this before they buy?
I'll let them know anyway.
Happy sofa and carpet shopping, all!
Cheers,

I got told the same for my sofa and they were right it did soften up over time. They did warn me in advance as well when I ordered on the phone.0
