Money Moral Dilemma: Should we help pay for a new fence?

  • If you allow the fence to be replaced with taller panels then it is their responsibility to pay as they want the change to benefit them, ie the dog doesn't escape. However, if the fence needs replacing anyway then offer to pay half and that you will maintain your side of the fence panels. Just make sure the fence posts are note moved to facilitate the change as you could lose some land. Another alternative is for them to put up taller panels on their side of the fence/boundary.

Make the neighbour pay for and erect his own fence, on his side of the boundary ....

    But you know that.

What a ridiculous question, there's no dilemma here.

Boundary is a theoretical line suspended in thin air.
You have a fence against the boundary on your side.
If he wants something bigger on his side that's his problem, his to pay for. Nothing to do with you.
  • If the neighbour is wanting the new fence to keep their dog in - which they have a legal responsibility to do, then it only fair that you allow it.

I think they should pay but make sure you agree height, colour, etc first as you cannot complain afterwards if you don't like it.

You obviously want to get on and have good relations with your neighbours so it is important that you do agree for them to do this.

Our previous neighbour had put up an eyesore of a fence and when new ones moved in they immediately told us they would replace it and pay for it, although this fence was our responsibility! They have maintained it ever since too, which has been fantastic.

We get on extremely well with all our neighbours now - we all help each other, move our bins back for both sides - mow our lawns, always have a quick chat, take in parcels, etc.

Why not just allow them to put trellis type on the top of your fence ?
problem of dog solved, nice and cheap, will not affect light, and then they can pay - it's their dog.
