If the son doesn't find the £600 pretty quickly, the garage will undoubtedly start charging for storage - maybe £20 or £30 a day.

Perhaps it's about time to step back from helping him out of messes which are entirely of his own making?

Could use it as an opportunity, earlier you start living with your own mistakes, the sooner you start re-assessing risk, and planning and managing your life?

    in theory anyway:D
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

I have done not long after he ripped his mum off. I'll always be there to offer him advice but whether he chooses to act on it or not is his decision. I won't be giving/lending any money until he can prove to me that he's responsible enough to pay it back.

This is why I told him to try and work out a payment plan with them that would hopefully not involve storage costs but instead he's now told them to just go ahead and sell the car. I've told him as soon as they find out it has outstanding finance on it there will be nothing they can do. He then said that he'll stop paying the finance and they can then repossess the car from the garage.

I'm not sure what else to say to him :(

I'm trying not to let it bother me as he's old enough to make his own decisions but it just leaves me feeling depressed.:(

If that's his way of dealing with these issues then let him carry out.

But i wouldn't help him financially with any future endeavours. If you do, he'll never be able to become responsible with his money.

if the garage has a lien on the car then they have more rights to it than the finance company...

£600 isn't a great deal of money? How nice for you ...

Sorry didnt mean it come across like that :-)

What I mean is if he can save it easily in 3 weeks then its not a lot for him. If he chooses to have insurance with £600 excess then has an accident then he needs to know this might happen.
  • OP - you have my sympathies. I've got a brother (hes 46) whos still like this. Takes no responsibilities on himself and then its woe is me when things go wrong.

Hes done all sorts in the past. Nearly had house repossessed, car etc. Nearly been to prison for tax debt. All because he blows all the money he earns down the pub.

Yet my 82 year old Dad still worries himself sick about him.... Annoys me.

Good luck. I'd say let him crack on and learn his own lessons.

They won't repossess the car from the Garage.

The Garage will hold a lien on the car, not even the finance company can take it from the Garage until the Garages costs have been paid.

And this includes storage fees from the day the car was ready for collection.
