Hi,
My sister is carer for mum and in receipt of carers allowance. If mum needs to go in a home, does sister have any protection in regarding living in family home?
Sister has never owned property and doesn't have any savings.

Who owns the house??Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

How old is your sister? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
House is owned by mum, but sister has lived there as mums carer for 14yrs. She is early 50's.0

In these circumstances there is no mandatory obligation for the council to disregard the value of the property.
However, there is a discretion for the council to disregard.

Thanks all, its seems quite complicated, but basically once savings are used up, if council force a house sale, sister would be left homeless.0

Not worried about inheritance, more about sister being forced out of the house and being homeless if mum has to go into a care home.0 -

Could she not stay with you or another relative until she finds employment?
I can understand your concern, it is valid, but your terminology is rather emotive. Hopefully she will have options other than being homeless.0 -
