Inkjet or Laser printer

We are considering replacing our old HP printer as it seems to getting through ink cartridges at an alarming rate despite only having minimal use at home. It is one of the Photosmart which we liked because it was compact and space could be an issue. We don't know how many sheets each cartridge should cover/print before running out. When buying a new printer is it best to get another Inkjet or a Laser printer. Which will be the most cost effective. Any suggesions/recommendations pleae

I think it very much depends on your requirements and usage pattern. I print very very rarely, and would never go back to using an inkjet since it would invariably be clogged up each time I tried to use it. (Memories of desperately trying to print out an address label in time for a fedex man coming at short notice to collect something.)
I was lucky enough to get a laser printer off freecycle, and it's completely reliable. Only mono, but that's enough for my needs. (I have an inkjet 3-in-1, and use that for scanning, but if I needed a colour print I'm not sure I'd even bother trying to print on it... probably just go to the library instead.)0 -
I have a laser printer which is used as the day to day printer and a colour inkjet for when colour is needed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

You need to tell us what you need to print, (4 col, mono, graphics, text, pictures) and approx how many copies per month. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

This is exactly what I do, although it's been a while since I needed to have anything in colour. I bought a laser with auto duplex (Samsung M2835DW) to save paper when printing academic articles.0
