Debit on cancelled card

OH had a work credit card which he cancelled by phone and also letter (at their request) 12mths ago when he left. Apparently he was personally responsible for purchases not the company.

Card company is now chasing us for a debit on the cancelled card.

They are persistent and have also suspended our personal cards with them (he's main and I am supplementary). We therefore have no credit cards to use. We have had these cards for at least 8 years and have had no problems with payments and have unblemished credit scores.

Ombudsman says they won't deal with him yet.

Any advice please?

What was the debit for? and did you receive the service it was for? Of not get a refund from the company and if you did pay it, just cancelling a card doesn't remove the liability to pay whatever it was

    Magazine subscription (more than £100)

Card address was work address. No we didn't receive the service.

They should have cancelled the card so that it was inactive. Not heard from them for 12mths and then get a pay up phone call.

They probably did. But an authorised payment (a CPA) will reactivate it.

If it's a legitimate payment that wasn't cancelled, I would pay the card ASAP.

Did you cancel the magazine subscription ? If not, did you receive the magazines ? Sounds like it may have been a Continuous Payment Authority, which just cancelling the card won't stop.

Never had a subscription on it so no CPA.
Never cancelled because never aware of subscription on it.
Never came to the house because it was a work account.
    Never authorised it.
    No service received.
No overdue letters because it was a work account.

So someone fraudulently took out a subscription on your card ? If so, I'd be contacting the employer in the first instance to see if they know anything about it. If they say that no-one in the company was authorised to make purchases on that card apart from you then report the fraud to the card company.

Maybe the subscription was delivered to your husband's place of work. And was delivered regularly month after month, although your husband had left the firm a long time ago.

In which case it was unauthorised and he never received the service.

Thank you all. Off for another fight....

I don't see how you came to this conclusion.

Theoretically, he could have bought the subscription before leaving and failed to cancel it.
...and he never received the service...
    This is irrelevant.
