Gas Meter Reading

Options
Just moved into a new house and the gas meter viewing panel is cloudyour so you can't read the numbers. Have contacted my supplier who have told me that the issue in question is not a fault with the meter so they won't come out and fix it. But they will replace the whole meter for a cost to myself of £89! I'm arguing that it was like that when I moved in (letting agent listed the fault on inventory prior to me moving in) but the letting agent wouldn't do anything as it was a gas supply issue. Has anyone else had a similar situation and if so is there an outcome where I don't have to pay for a new meter?

I see this sort of thing all the time.sometimes if you get very closely to the meter and shine a torch (not too bright ) above it close to the index, or below, you can see the reading. Even I can t manage it a lot of the time. One particular gas meter was very bad with this fault, a Siemens meter. I think I would switch supplier in revenge as not all suppliers act like this.Scottish Power are the worst. The siemens meter is a fault on the inside of the meter.
Also some meters will condense up with water droplets on the index inside .In this case I will tap the meter index face continually for a few minutes not too hard , and eventually the condensation droplets will displace enough to see the reading.
This is a fault in the meter seal or its been subject to local flooding and has nothing to do with the customer as they are supposed to be waterproof .You should not have to pay a penny for a new meter IMO.
The meters frequently say on them "property of National Grid " who rent out the meters via standing charges to the suppliers. Its not owned by occupiers and therefore should not be your responsibility for natural damage. If the meter has been damaged by the occupiers that is a different matter and they can be quite expensive to replace.

    Hmmm
Though you are the registered user and pay the bills, the Gas meter is part of the fixtures and fittings which are the landlords responsibilty, that said, if the meter really is unreadable, ( See Sascquacco's advice ), it should be changed for free.

The meter is owned by the Gas distrubution company for your area, but it's your supplier who is your point of contact with them, but. there is at least one supplier whose Terms & Conditions make you responsible for all costs regarding meters - Who is your supplier?
