Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with EDF.
I was with Scottish Power for Electricity and was due to moved house in October 2015. I advised them of my new address and said I would like to continue with them but also I would now have a gas supply and would like duel fuel. They agreed, set up the details and took my new home meter readings. A week or so later I received my welcome pack. I currently study for a degree and work so didn't go online to check my bill until February. There was no bill, when I called Scottish Power they advise that EDF had declined the transfer on several occasions. I called EDF and they confirmed they had declined as I was not a customer. I told them I didn't want to be a customer, hence Scottish Power. EDF never contacted me during the period October to February, no bills, nothing. Furthermore when I queried the tariff they advised I was on the highest unit price! Their complaints procedure has reported it was my fault I should have contacted them and opened an account in October! So my understanding is, EDF can refuse to transfer your supply, not tell you AND charge you the highest rate unit charge!!!!! Scandalous.

EDF are correct. The gas and electricity acts mandate what happens re deemed contracts on change of occupier. The old supplier of the premises is entitled to the supply. You should have contacted them.0

You cannot transfer utility accounts or suppliers from one property to another. The procedure is straightforward and has been in place since the 1980's. As soon as you occupy and use the power, you are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier, in this case EDF. As soon as you register with them and submit an opening read, which is what you should have done in October, you are free to start a switch to your preferred supplier, which takes around 3 weeks.
If you fail to register, then you are placed on Standard tariff, which is also the most expensive.
The fact that you didn't check your utility billing (or bank account?) for 4 months is not the fault of the supplier.
In summary, you can't switch from a supplier you aren't already registered with. So not really scandalous at all, you just did it the wrong way.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks for the replies however if you are unaware of the 'system' is it fair that you are penalised? EDF have been extremely obstructive and actively arrogant. I accept that I should have been more observant however EDF ignored the transfer requests and sent no correspondence to the property whatsoever, every other service company sent 'New Occupier' letters. EDF have an incentive to keep quiet and this is what I think is underhand.0

Hardly EDFs fault if you are not aware of the basics .Nor did you even try to find out .
We can all go around claiming i did not know about many things in life .
But really you are one of many and all this sort of stuff in my view should be taught before you are leave school .0
